5 Predictors of Early School Success

Updated: Apr 5, 2018

Children’s ability to learn depend on a lot of factors! Here are some great ways to be sure your child is ready to learn when they come to school.

1. Sleep. Make sure your child is getting enough sleep. Children sleep better without technology devices in their rooms. Establish a bedtime and a routine for bed that is similar every night.

2. Physical Activity. Make sure kids get 1 hour of physical activity daily. Outside play is great, but if weather prohibits, allow some indoor movement games such as twister or dancing to music!

3. Communication. Talking to kids about their day or through play helps them to develop communication skills that are crucial throughout the school day.

4. Attention. Teaching kids to wait 5 minutes for an item or take turns during a game develops their focus and attention, which is a major part of the school day.

5. Social Skills. Helping children to develop social skills such as saying hello and goodbye, using eye contact, saying please and thank you at the dinner table, and using words to explain how they are feeling are great ways to develop social skills.
